A Liberian man has raised debate online pointing out a birthday gift trend that he just can’t wrap his head around. Though we all know that birthdays are for feeling special and celebrated, but some gift trends can leave you scratching your head.

A major one he pointed out is being handed a photo of yourself. Roland Barbiah’s recent post about this trend sums it up perfectly: there’s just something odd about receiving your own picture as a gift.

Don’t get it wrong—Roland isn’t dismissing genuine art. But in the comments, Kladé Neufville with similar thinking as him pointed out that a hand-painted portrait is way different and special; it shows effort and sentiment. And accordingly, Roland agreed emphasizing that a canvas painted by an artist holds value because of the time and creativity behind it. What doesn’t sit right, though, is when someone takes a picture that you have already posted, prints it, frames it and gifts it to you.

So, is gifting a portrait a hit or a miss? For some, it’s a totally sweet gesture; for others, it’s the epitome of re-gifting something what’s already theirs. So is it safe to say that next time you’re considering a birthday present, it might be wise to think beyond what’s already in your camera roll?

Now, be honest, would you want a photo of yourself as a gift, or are you team “no, thank you”?
