U.S. Ambassador to Liberia, Mark Toner, has attributed the high rate of visa denials for Liberians to a widespread lack of honesty amongst Liberian applicants.
During a recent interview on ELBC Radio, Ambassador Toner we revealed that more than half of the Liberians who travel to the U.S. on visitor visas fail to return home within their designated timeframe.
This violation of visa terms has led to Liberia ranking fourth globally in visa rejection rates, with 78.19% of applications being denied for the 2023/2024 period. Ambassador Toner emphasized that the denials are not driven by bias against Liberia but are instead a consequence of the behavior of some applicants.
The U.S. embassy’s visa policies have recently come under intense scrutiny as many Liberians continue to express frustration over the difficulty in obtaining visas for travel to the United States, a country considered as their colonial master.
