Cameroon’s long-serving president, Paul Biya, made a public return to the country after spending weeks abroad, which had fueled widespread rumors about his health. At 91 years old, Biya’s appearance was closely watched, and his arrival at the airport was broadcast on national television. The footage showed him alongside his wife, Chantal Biya, shaking hands with officials as crowds gathered to welcome him back.
Supporters, many dressed in clothing adorned with the president’s image, lined the streets, chanting and drumming in celebration as Biya’s motorcade made its way from the airport to the presidential palace. CRTV, the state broadcaster, dedicated extensive coverage to the event, emphasizing the president’s return.
The president’s absence from the United Nations General Assembly in New York and a major summit for French-speaking nations in Paris had sparked speculation about his health. To address the growing rumors, the government released a statement on October 8, confirming that President Biya would return to the country soon. Shortly after, local media was banned from discussing his health status.
President Biya’s return was a significant moment, demonstrating his continued leadership despite the concerns surrounding his health. As one of Africa’s oldest and longest-serving leaders, his presence in Cameroon remains central to the country’s political landscape.
