Deputy Speaker Thomas Fallah took the reins in Thursday’s legislative session at the Capitol Building, addressing rising pressure from a coalition within the House of Representatives. This coalition, composed of majority bloc members, has been advocating for the speaker’s removal and had plans to elect a Speaker Pro-Tempore if Fallah did not make an appearance.
On October 28, 2024, Fallah responded to Acting Chief Clerk James Toubie, acknowledging the coalition’s request for his attendance. His letter referenced the majority bloc’s insistence that he fulfill his duties in the Joint Chamber, citing the “relevant provisions of House Rules and the Liberian Constitution” as the grounds for their request.
Fallah explained that his brief absence was necessary to consult with his legal team, allowing him to ensure any decisions would align with the nation’s laws. He expressed gratitude for his colleagues’ understanding while he took time to consider his options.
Despite initially asking for additional time, Fallah’s presence at Thursday’s session signaled his commitment to the majority bloc’s directive. His entry led presiding officer Representative Clarence Gahr to step aside, making way for Fallah to take control. This prompt action helped prevent potential conflicts, as the coalition had previously warned they might declare Fallah’s seat vacant if he did not comply.
Political analysts view Fallah’s swift response as a recognition of the majority bloc’s growing influence within the House, marking a significant moment in Liberia’s legislative proceedings.
