Bomi County Senator Edwin Melvin Snowe Jr. has voiced serious concerns about the deteriorating condition of Monrovia, describing the city as filthy and hazardous to the health of its residents. Speaking during a Senate session on Thursday, September 5, 2024, Senator Snowe stressed that the capital’s state is unacceptable and unbefitting of Liberia in the 21st century.
Senator Snowe urged his fellow lawmakers to prioritize the revitalization of Monrovia, which he believes has been neglected for far too long. He pointed to the Palm Grove Cemetery and the old Ministry of Education building on Broad Street as stark examples of the city’s decline. To address this, he proposed relocating the cemetery and enforcing regulations that would require the renovation of abandoned buildings or, if necessary, government intervention.
In his passionate plea, Senator Snowe emphasized that Monrovia should reflect the pride and progress of Liberia, not its neglect. “The condition of Monrovia is a poor reflection on our nation,” he stated, underscoring the need for immediate government action to restore the city’s image.
His remarks resonate with many citizens who have long called for better infrastructure and urban development in the capital. Senator Snowe’s appeal adds to growing pressure on the government to make Monrovia a cleaner, healthier, and more visually appealing city for all Liberians.
