Gbarpolu County Senator Amara Konneh has reiterated his stance regarding the culture of constant begging that he claims is disrupting the work of Liberian senators. Konneh emphasized that he stands by his earlier comments, stating that too many Liberians show up unexpectedly at the Capitol, primarily seeking financial assistance rather than focusing on legislative matters.
The senator explained that these uninvited visits distract lawmakers, making it difficult for them to concentrate on their duties. He also pointed to a broader issue of corruption in Liberia, suggesting that this culture of solicitation contributes to the problem, especially when the requests come from individuals who have no direct relationship with public officials or the government.
Konneh further highlighted the personal toll these distractions have taken on him, noting that they have affected both his health and personal life. He shared that the constant interruptions have reduced his time with family and disrupted his sleep. The senator urged Liberians, particularly those in Monrovia, to respect office protocols and visiting hours, allowing public officials to focus on their legislative responsibilities without unnecessary interference.
In his view, if citizens adhered to proper channels of communication, it would create a more effective working environment, similar to practices followed in other countries around the world.
