San Marino made history with a 1-0 victory over Liechtenstein in the UEFA Nations League, marking their first win in two decades and their first-ever competitive match triumph. Nicko Sensoli’s decisive goal in the 53rd minute sealed the historic win on Thursday night, sending both players and fans into wild celebrations at San Marino Stadium.
Before this monumental achievement, San Marino – ranked the lowest in the world at 210th – had only ever won one match in their history, a 2004 friendly against Liechtenstein. That match, also ending 1-0, had been their sole victory until now. This latest success ends San Marino’s 140-game winless streak, the longest in international football history.
San Marino’s team is primarily composed of amateur players, which makes their achievement even more impressive. The last time they triumphed over Liechtenstein, it was thanks to a goal from Andy Selva, the country’s all-time leading scorer with eight goals.
Now, sitting atop Group D1 in the Nations League, San Marino will look to build on this momentum as they prepare to face Moldova on Tuesday. Gibraltar also awaits in what could be a promising campaign for San Marino.
This victory symbolizes hope and perseverance for the team and its fans, marking a proud moment in San Marino’s football history.
