Since Friday, September 20, 2024, severe flooding has affected vast areas of Monrovia and its surrounding regions, creating widespread disruptions. Streets across the city have been inundated, leaving thousands of residents displaced and causing significant concern among the city’s leadership.
The Mayor of Monrovia, along with the City Government, expressed regret over the ongoing situation and reaffirmed their commitment to addressing the issue. They have called for an investigation into the root causes of the flooding, which has affected key areas of the capital, and are working closely with local and international partners to implement immediate and long-term solutions.
The City Government has indicated that climate change may be a contributing factor, as more intense rainfall events are becoming increasingly common. While consultations with environmental and disaster management experts continue, officials have taken action to minimize the damage. The City is collaborating with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA), and various international organizations to assess the situation and strategize responses.
In the interim, residents have been urged to avoid improper disposal of waste in drainage systems and waterways, which has worsened the flooding. Blocked drainage lines have exacerbated the overflow, highlighting the need for proper waste management practices within the city.
While an official cause for the flooding is yet to be determined, Monrovia’s City Government is working diligently to manage the crisis and put in place preventive measures for the future. Authorities are assuring residents that all available resources will be mobilized to resolve the issue and prevent further displacement.
A comprehensive update will be provided once experts complete their assessments and offer recommendations for future flood prevention.
