Mayor John-Charuk Siafa of Monrovia City recently highlighted education, agriculture, and tourism as his key priorities after attending a conference in the People’s Republic of China. The event, held in Guizhou Province during the week of September 8th, centered on strengthening international ties through sister city relationships and cooperation.
During his visit, Mayor Siafa secured several significant opportunities for Monrovia:
Education: A 5-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed with Guizhou University. This agreement includes initiatives for student and faculty exchanges, joint research programs, and scholarships at the Master’s and PhD levels. Currently, five scholarships are available, with ongoing talks about vocational training opportunities.
Agriculture: Mayor Siafa reached an agreement to pilot an intelligent agriculture project, which will involve building a greenhouse on a local university campus. The project aims to equip agricultural students with modern techniques, enhancing Liberia’s agricultural education.
Tourism: Through the International Mountain Tourism Association, Monrovia now has access to a global network of over 193 tourism professionals. In collaboration with the Tourism Alliance of Liberia, represented by Madam Mai Urey and Mr. Rudolph Antoine, Mayor Siafa is eager to leverage this partnership to strengthen Liberia’s tourism sector.
Mayor Siafa expressed gratitude to the Chinese Ambassador in Liberia, President Joseph Nyuma Boakai Sr., and the people of Guizhou Province and Monrovia for their unwavering support in making this visit a success.
