The Chess Team of Liberia has returned to the country after a remarkable run on the international stage. They were greeted upon their arrival at Roberts International Airport with cheers and warm embraces from supporters who gathered to welcome the team home. It was a moment of pride not only for the players but for the entire nation as they stood tall on the global chess scene.
On the global stage, the spotlight was firmly on Abigail Karyah and Georgina Sackie, two young Liberian chess queens who made waves during the 45th Chess Olympiad in Budapest, Hungary. Both players showcased extraordinary skill and determination in their matches, representing Liberia with honor and grace. With Abigail earning the title of Woman FIDE Master (WFM), the third-highest rank in chess, after nine intense rounds at the Olympiad and Georgina Sackie competing on the most challenging board and facing the strongest opponents from each team, performed remarkably well. With a score of 5.5/9, she earned herself the prestigious Woman Candidate Master (WCM) title, an achievement that has the entire country beaming with pride. 
The success of Abigail and Georgina at the 45th Olympiad has ignited a renewed passion for chess in Liberia, particularly among young women. Their achievements have set a powerful example, showing that Liberians can excel on the global stage with the right mindset and support.
The Liberia Chess Federation, along with various partners, has expressed pride in the team’s accomplishments and is hopeful that the sport will continue to grow within the country. The arrival of the chess team marks the beginning of a new chapter for chess in Liberia.
