The former finance Minister of Liberia, Hon. Samuel D. Tweah has officially entered the country and subsequently turned himself in to answer questions and give his side of the story about the US$6.2 million corruption and money laundering scandal. Sources confirmed that Tweah arrived in the country at approximately 1:00 a.m. and he subsequently went home to get prepared to turn himself in to Criminal Court “C”. His turning in follows an order issued by Resident Circuit Judge of Criminal Court “C,” His Honor A. Blamo Dixon, as part of an ongoing investigation into a high-profile corruption case.

Tweah, who had been a fugitive since July 30, 2024, was one of several former high-ranking government officials targeted by arrest warrants issued on September 6, 2024. The warrants were signed by Clerk of Court Knowles W. Shain and directed authorities to apprehend the accused based on an indictment prepared by the Grand Jury.

In addition to Samuel D. Tweah, the other individuals implicated in the case include:

• Cllr. Nyenati Tuan, former Acting Minister of Justice and Solicitor General

• Stanley S. Ford, former Director General of the Financial Intelligence Agency (FIA)

• D. Moses P. Cooper, former Comptroller of the FIA

• Jefferson Karmoh, former National Security Advisor

The charges against them include economic sabotage, money laundering, fraud, criminal conspiracy, misuse of public funds, and theft. The corruption scandal has drawn significant attention both locally and internationally, with many concerned about its potential impact on Liberia’s governance and its reputation on the global stage.

Tweah is currently being held in police custody, and authorities are continuing efforts to locate and arrest the other individuals named in the indictment. As the legal proceedings unfold, the trial’s outcome is expected to play a pivotal role in Liberia’s broader fight against corruption and efforts to strengthen governance.

Sources at the grounds of the Temple of Justice have confirmed that the former finance minister has entered the court to initiate a testimony of his innocence as the case is hugely monitored by both the Liberian public and international observers, who are looking to see whether the country can effectively address corruption at the highest levels of government.
