After Liberia’s recent tough loss to Algeria at home, the conversation around football investment has sparked again. Legendary Liberian DJ and current representative of Montserrado District 17 took to social media to express his frustration, and his words hit hard:
“Football is preparation. You cannot expect a country that invests millions into football to be outmatched by a country with less than a 200K budget for football… NEVER!”
Let’s face it, our national team has been struggling. Algeria, a football powerhouse, didn’t just outplay us—they out-prepared us. And that’s exactly what the rep is pointing out. It’s not just about showing up on the pitch and hoping for a miracle. Football is a serious business, and those who put in the money see the results.
Algeria is a country that heavily invests in its football program, from top-notch training facilities to highly experienced coaches. On the other hand, Liberia’s football budget is a fraction of that, and it’s showing in our performances. It’s tough to expect our players to compete at that level when the support structure just isn’t there.
But here’s the truth: this isn’t about lacking talent. We’ve got plenty of skilled players, both at home and abroad. The issue is, without proper funding, we’re not giving our players the tools they need to win. Preparation means money spent on training, facilities, international exposure, and top-level coaching. And unfortunately, we’re falling behind.
The representative’s message resonates because it’s a wake-up call. If we want to see our national team make a real impact, we need to invest like we mean it. It’s time to stop expecting our players to do the impossible with so little and start demanding the right kind of support from those who can make it happen.
At the end of the day, football is about pride, unity, and representing Liberia on the world stage. With proper preparation, our team can stand toe-to-toe with any nation. But until we put serious investment behind the sport, we’ll keep seeing the same results.
