After an agonizing 1 year and 7 months in the mortuary with series or autopsies, the remains of the late Charlotte Musu have finally been laid to rest today. The tragic and untimely death of Musu, who was murdered in February 2023, sent shockwaves throughout Liberia. She was killed at the residence of former Chief Justice Gloria Musu Scott, former chief Justice of Liberia, whose involvement in the case led to a hectic legal battle.

The murder case drew national attention, not only because of Charlotte’s brutal death but also because of the individuals accused and involved. Cllr. Scott and three others were charged in connection to Musu’s gruesome murder, starting huge public debate and numerous controversies. After months of legal proceedings, on August 29, 2024, the Supreme Court of Liberia acquitted all four individuals, ruling that there was insufficient evidence to convict them.

Despite the court’s ruling, many in the country remain divided over the outcome of the ruling, with emotions running high as the case touched on issues of justice, power, and the legal system’s ability to deliver fair outcomes of such cases. Musu’s family and loved ones have endured a painful journey, from the shock of her murder to the extended wait for her burial due to the court case.

Today, however, the focus is on honoring her memory and allowing her to finally rest in peace. For her family, friends, and community, the long-awaited moment brings closure, though the scars of this tragedy are unlikely to fade anytime soon.
