In a dramatic escalation of tensions, clashes have erupted between supporters of the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) and the Liberia National Police. The situation has rapidly deteriorated, with the police deploying tear gas and using sticks, while CDC supporters retaliated by throwing rocks. The ensuing chaos has led to a complete halt in vehicle movement in the affected areas, creating a serious and life-threatening situation for all involved.
Mayor Jefferson Koijee, the Secretary General of the CDC, has condemned the violence and alleged that heavily armed state security forces have stormed the party’s headquarters for the second time this morning. According to Koijee, the police engagement included sporadic shootings that have incited panic and disorder among citizens and party supporters in and around the headquarters.
In his statement, Koijee has called for immediate international attention, urging ECOWAS, the African Union, the international community, and the Liberian people to intervene. He accuses the Boakai Administration of orchestrating actions that threaten the fragile peace of the nation and disrupt the political stability achieved through significant efforts.
Koijee emphasized that the peace of Liberia is paramount and should transcend individual political ambitions. The CDC urges all parties involved to exercise restraint and work towards de-escalating the situation.
As the crisis unfolds, we at Geez Liberia hope for a swift resolution and call on all stakeholders to prioritize dialogue and peaceful solutions. We will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide updates as more information becomes available.
