In a significant legal development, a federal judge has temporarily blocked President Joe Biden’s effort to grant legal status to immigrant spouses of U.S. citizens, following a lawsuit brought by 16 Republican-led states. The decision by U.S. District Judge J. Campbell Barker puts a hold on the ‘parole in place’ program, a measure that was expected to benefit nearly 500,000 immigrants and their approximately 50,000 children.

The ‘Parole in Place’ Program: What It Means

Announced in June, the ‘parole in place’ program was designed to provide humanitarian relief to certain illegal immigrant spouses of U.S. citizens, allowing them to remain in the country while pursuing a path to permanent residency. The program was seen as a compassionate step to keep families together and provide legal stability to those who would otherwise face deportation.

Traditionally, immigrants who are in the U.S. illegally are required to leave the country and apply for legal reentry to gain lawful status. The ‘parole in place’ program aimed to bypass this requirement, enabling eligible spouses to adjust their status
