A wedding guest has re-lived the shocking moment she was forced to wash dishes because the bride and groom opted for \’self-catering\’ after they blew their budget on an \’expensive\’ venue.

The guest said the couple had \’gone all out\’ on their wedding day, renting out an \’opulent\’ venue while the bride was dressed in a \’beautiful\’ couture gown after spending a fortune on it.

A family friend who\’s a chef volunteered to prepare the buffet food – all made from \’top-of-the-line\’ ingredients like premium cuts of meat, artisan breads and cheeses.

And so it came as a huge surprise when there was only enough food to feed three quarters of the guests, while the rest was \’hungry\’ – and a group of 10 were ushered into kitchen to clean the dirty dishes.

\’My boyfriend came back to the table with an empty plate. When I asked why, he says there\’s no more food,\’ the guest, who\’s related to the bride, said on Reddit.

\’Okay, no problem. I find the bride\’s mum and whisper that she should probably ask the caterers to put out more food. She gets a peculiar expression on her face and says there is no more food. What was on the buffet line is all that they have.

\’It then comes out that the bride and groom blew most of their wedding money on the venue and the bride\’s gown, so they decided to \”self cater\”.\’

The guest said the maid of honour then approached her and nine others, asking them to follow her into the kitchen.

\’There is no air conditioning so the kitchen is a zillion degrees. She shows us stacks of plates and cups and then tells us we need to wash them,\’ she said.

\’Apparently part of self-catering is you rent the dishes and glassware, and if they aren\’t returned clean at the end of the evening you lose your deposit.

\’But since the bride and groom are pinching pennies at this point, they haven\’t hired anyone to clean up. So I and nine other guests spend most of the reception in the kitchen, elbow deep in soap and water.\’

The guest said the group missed the first dance and the cutting of the cake.

\’But turns out to be for the best because… wait for it… they hadn\’t purchase enough cake for everyone either,\’ she explained.

The guest said the wedding happened three years ago when she was just 21 – and she wanted to share the story now \’just to give everyone a laugh\’.

\’The couple divorced three years later… I declined my invitation to the bride\’s second wedding,\’ she said.

After sharing her story, many were horrified, with one saying: \’Imagine having to wash dishes when you didn\’t even dirty one because there wasn\’t enough food for you.\’

While another added: \’If anyone was to wash dishes, it should have been the bridal party, not the guests. Or the couple could have figured out how to hire someone.\’

Many asked the guest why she didn\’t refuse to wash the dishes or walk out of the venue the moment her boyfriend wasn\’t served any food.

\’I now know that\’s what I should have done. But I was 21 when this happened and had been raised to believe family helps family. I am much more assertive now,\’ she said.
